Small cell traffic backhaul is a growing challenge as small cellsproliferate in 4G/LTE mobile infill situations and for other cellular areaswith patchy (or no) coverage. Millimeter-wave backhaul presents one solution tothis challenge and Xilinx has just announced IP to support millimeter-wave radio backhaul atdata rates to 1.6Gbps with future extensions planned to 10Gbps. The Xilinx 256QAM Millimeter Wave SmartCORE Modem IP solution supports point-to-point and multipointline-of-sight communications and addresses the needs of both 60GHz and 80GHzradio backhaul.

All integrated versions of the modem are supported by the Zynq-7000 SoC,Kintex FPGAs, and the new Kintex UltraScale device family. The modemincorporates all PHY layer features including QPSK-256QAM modulation, 20-250MHzbandwidth support (optionally up to 500MHz), adaptive modulation, adaptive DPD,FEC, I/Q imbalance correction, automatic frequency recovery, and a hybriddecision-directed equalizer. Both 1GbE and 10GbE interfaces can be used aspayload interfaces. You can also use a CPRI interface for wireless fronthaulapplications.
